Kauri Creek camping area

Kauri Creek camping area occupies an open grassy bank beside a quiet inlet of Lake Tinaroo in Danbulla State Forest. It works for tents, camper trailers and campervans, with conventional-vehicle and boat access, flush toilets and a bring-your-own-shower room. The draw is being able to swim, paddle, fish and start rainforest walks directly from camp.

There are no separately marked sites. Campers choose space within the booked open area, so waterfront position, shade and ground firmness vary with occupancy, rain and lake level.

Layout and suitable setups#

Queensland Parks lists an open grassy camping area for tents beside vehicles, campervans, camper trailers and large groups. It does not list a fixed number of individual sites. Leave room for shared access and do not spread into vegetation or block the shoreline.

Kauri Creek is not a caravan destination. The campground itself can be reached by conventional vehicle, but Tablelands Regional Council signs say Danbulla Road is unsuitable for caravans. A booking category that accepts a camper trailer should not be read as approval for a full-size caravan.

The lake is immediately accessible for swimming, canoeing and fishing. Submerged timber and other hazards move relative to the water level, so boat slowly and do not assume an inlet is clear because it was clear on a previous visit.

Getting there and current conditions#

The campground is 9km from Danbulla Road's western entrance and 19km from the eastern entrance, about 70km or 1.5 hours from Cairns. Much of Danbulla Road is unsealed, although Queensland Parks describes it as accessible to conventional vehicles. Boat access is also possible.

At this guide's review on 16 September 2026, Queensland Parks listed reduced campground capacity due to elevated Lake Tinaroo levels through 27 October 2026. Treat the live booking inventory and any closure notice as authoritative.

Facilities and what to bring#

Facilities include flushing toilets, taps, a shower room where you supply your own shower, and individual fire rings. The taps are not a substitute for carrying drinking water. Bring all potable water, insect repellent, rubbish bags, a shower setup and a backup fuel stove.

Fires are allowed in the rings unless a ban applies. Bring firewood from outside the forest; collecting it in Danbulla is prohibited. Generators are not permitted at Kauri Creek. Mobile reception is generally available, but download the permit and map before leaving sealed roads. Dogs are not permitted in Danbulla camping areas.

Walks and time on the water#

The first 600m of the Jungaljungal walk leads to Kauri Creek day-use area and its sandy-bottomed creek. The longer Jungaljungal route continues through rainforest, while the Regeneration walk links Kauri Creek with Downfall Creek campground. Conditions can be wet and creek crossings change, so use the official walking information rather than assuming a circuit is dry.

What campers say#

Traveller reports support the appeal of the official setting. A detailed National Park Odyssey stay describes open grassy choices, some more private lakeside positions and gravel that was preferable during wet weather. The same account highlights abundant birdlife and nighttime wildlife, but those sightings are anecdotes, not reliable predictions for another stay.

A public Tripadvisor review also praises the grassed setting near the amenities. Reviews of the nearby Jungaljungal walk mention leeches and creek crossings after wet weather. Together, these reports suggest bringing insect protection and inspecting the ground before setting up; they do not override official advice on lake, road or fire conditions.

Booking#

Book a permit through the Queensland Parks booking service before arrival. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 11am. Save the booking number offline and confirm the setup category matches your vehicle.
