Dandabah camping area

Dandabah is the most developed camping option in Bunya Mountains National Park: a large, open grass area where campers can set up beside their vehicles, use hot showers and flush toilets, and walk to trailheads and private village services.

It is accessible by conventional vehicles, but that does not make every rig suitable. The roads climbing the Bunya Mountains are steep, narrow and winding, and the campground itself is an open allocation area rather than a row of reserved numbered pads.

An open camping area, not 50 sites#

Queensland Parks lists a maximum capacity of 50 people. That number is sometimes mistaken for a site count, but the official description says there are no defined sites. Your booking secures permission for the camping area and party size, not a specific rectangle of grass.

Arrive with enough daylight to assess slope, drainage, neighbouring setups and vehicle clearance. Keep within the designated area and leave room for shared access. The grass is comfortable for tents, but mountain rain and heavy traffic can change ground conditions.

Vehicle and road access#

Dandabah is reached by 2WD roads and accepts tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. The live booking service also lists motorhomes, while warning that large caravans, motorhomes and buses may not negotiate the mountain roads. Check the combined length, turning circle and braking capability of your setup rather than relying on the broad vehicle icon alone.

There are three steep, winding approaches to the plateau. Review the official Dandabah page and current park alerts, then choose the route appropriate for your vehicle. Mobile reception is poor, so download the route and permits before the climb.

Facilities and supplies#

Dandabah has flushing toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, shelters, rubbish bins, electric barbecues and water that must be treated before drinking. Bring drinking water and a fuel stove as backups. Open fires and generators are prohibited.

The booking listing and detailed park page differ on whether showers and electric barbecues currently require coins. Take coins and verify the live listing rather than counting on either being free. A restaurant, general store, private accommodation and public phone are nearby, but their trading hours and availability are independent of the campground.

Paths and some amenities support assisted access, but natural grades remain. The campground is a useful base for the eastern walking tracks; check track distances and closures before committing to a route.

Mountain weather and wildlife#

Dandabah sits high on the Bunya Mountains plateau, so conditions can be cooler, wetter and windier than the plains below. Pack warm layers and wet-weather shelter even when the forecast at the base looks mild. Choose a pitch after checking the ground rather than assuming every part of the open lawn will drain the same way.

Wallabies and birds commonly move through the village and camping area. Watch from a distance, keep food and rubbish closed, and never feed wildlife. Driving slowly is especially important around dawn, dusk and busy pedestrian areas. Poor reception also makes a downloaded park map and offline booking confirmation worthwhile.

What campers say#

Recent public guides and review summaries show a fairly consistent pattern, while remaining traveller opinion:

• A November 2025 camping guide highlights easy vehicle access, soft grass, clean flush toilets and hot showers as Dandabah's main strengths for families and less-experienced campers.
• The same account found the circular open area exposed, sloping in places and busier near the village's day-use attractions. Arriving early enough to assess the ground matters more here than chasing a numbered site that does not exist.
• CamperMate's public campground reviews repeatedly mention wallabies around the grass and generally clean amenities. Wildlife should be observed from a distance and never fed.
• The same comments praise the open lawn and nearby services, but an open layout means less screening between parties than a numbered bush site. Thoughtful pitch placement matters.
