Big Horse Creek Campground

Big Horse Creek Campground is a basic riverside base in the northern, highway-accessible section of Judbarra / Gregory National Park, about 10 kilometres west of Timber Creek. It is particularly useful for caravanners and anglers: NT Parks lists caravan camping here, and two-wheel-drive vehicles can reach the concrete boat ramps on the Victoria River. The river is crocodile habitat, however, so this is a boating and fishing base rather than a swimming stop.

Access and the best season#

The campground is reached from the Victoria Highway without using the park's remote four-wheel-drive tracks. That makes it one of Judbarra's more practical options for caravans, but wet-season weather can still affect roads and park access. NT tourism guidance recommends the drier May-to-September period for exploring because many internal roads close during the wet season.

Check the official Judbarra / Gregory National Park page and park alerts immediately before departure. Download the Avenza park map while online, remain on marked roads and aim to arrive before dark. A campground host operates during the May-to-September peak season, but campers should remain self-sufficient.

Booking and visitor pass#

Camping must be booked and paid online before arrival; NT Parks says payment is not available at the campground. Use the NT Parks booking portal for current rates and availability rather than relying on old directory prices.

Visitors to the Northern Territory also need an NT Parks Visitor Pass. The pass and campground booking are separate purchases. NT residents do not need a visitor pass but may be asked for proof of residency. Save both confirmations offline.

Facilities and camp rules#

NT Parks lists public toilets, fire pits and picnic areas in Judbarra. Big Horse Creek is an unpowered park campground rather than a serviced caravan park, so bring drinking water, food, shade, rubbish bags and a fuel stove. Treat any water collected from natural waterways before drinking and take all rubbish out.

Fires are allowed only in provided fireplaces and remain subject to restrictions. Collect firewood before reaching the picnic or camping area rather than stripping the site. Generators are permitted between 8am and 8.30pm; keep them away from neighbours and switch them off outside those hours.

The park's current pet rule is more nuanced than the previous article stated: pets are permitted along the Victoria Highway only and must stay on a leash. Confirm the boundary for your booked site and follow signs or ranger directions. Pets are not a reason to enter other parts of the national park.

River and crocodile safety#

The concrete ramps provide 2WD boat access to the Victoria River. Fish with lures only inside the park; bait is prohibited to reduce accidental turtle capture. Check NT fishing rules and boating conditions before launching.

Never swim and do not stand or camp close to the water's edge. Crocodiles may be present even when none are visible. Keep children and pets well back, clean fish away from the bank where permitted, never leave food scraps and follow all Crocwise signs and advice.

Public feedback on ParkCheck, CamperMate and Tripadvisor reveals several recurring, practical themes:

• Campers like the quiet highway stop and sunsets over the Victoria River, especially for one or two nights.
• Sites are often described as generous enough for caravans, but shade and exact dimensions vary.
• Drop toilets are basic; several reviewers found them clean, though that cannot be guaranteed between servicing visits.
• The boat ramp is an easy walk from camp, while crocodile warnings are repeatedly emphasised.
• Reception reports conflict by carrier and handset. Treat service as unreliable and complete bookings before arrival.

Older reviews quote obsolete fees and inconsistent pet rules; this guide uses current NT Government policy for both.
