Waddy Point Top camping area

Waddy Point Top is the fenced, inland campground at Waddy Point on north-east K’gari. Coastal woodland and the wongari-deterrent fence give it more shelter and structure than Waddy Point beachfront, while flushing toilets and coin-operated hot showers make it one of the island's better-equipped QPWS options. The beach, rocky headland, Champagne Pools and Ocean Lakes remain close by.

Do not confuse “Top” with the separate beachfront campground. Top has open tent areas, six dedicated off-road camper-trailer sites and a group area. It requires serious sand-driving preparation even though the amenities feel comparatively developed.

Tent, trailer and group areas#

Queensland Parks permits 25 tent groups in the large open tent areas and lists six camper-trailer sites. Trailer bays are marked by a trailer symbol rather than a number on the ground, and each booking accepts only one off-road camper trailer. A tent booking does not accommodate a trailer.

The large group site is for organised groups of 20 to 40 people. Some capacity may be reserved for commercial operators, so the online inventory can differ from a simple count. Consult the official Waddy Point Top page and campground map before booking.

Sites are sandy beneath Moreton Bay ash and other coastal trees. Bring sand pegs, extra ropes and weatherproof food storage. The fence reduces wongari access but does not replace safe behaviour: keep gates closed, supervise children, secure food and rubbish, and never feed wildlife.

4WD, tide and permit planning#

Road access requires a registered high-clearance 4WD with low range and a valid K’gari vehicle access permit. The campground is reached from Eastern Beach via the 5.7km Middle Rocks Bypass Road, about 5km north of Tukkee Wurroo (Indian Head). Queensland Parks warns of soft sand and rough track conditions between the headland and Waddy Point.

Eastern Beach driving is limited to roughly two hours either side of low tide. Check the K’gari conditions report, tides and alerts before every movement. As verified on 15 September 2026, infrastructure works affecting Waddy Point are scheduled through 9 November 2026, so follow current signs and do not assume all facilities or areas are unchanged.

Facilities, water and fires#

Facilities include flushing toilets, $2 coin-operated hot showers, picnic tables, washing-up facilities, water taps and communal fire rings. Treat tap water before drinking and carry potable water as a resilient backup. Rubbish must go to the QPWS waste-transfer station near the southern entrance to Orchid Beach township.

Fires are permitted only in QPWS rings when neither a local ban nor a QPWS prohibition applies. Bring untreated milled timber or mill off-cuts; collecting leaves, twigs or wood on K’gari is illegal. Generators are not permitted. Queensland Parks describes mobile reception as generally unavailable, so save permits and reports offline.

What campers say#

Public Waddy Point reviews repeatedly value the fence, strong hot showers and the ability to find a degree of separation within the open camping area. They also advise bringing enough coins and treating the amenities as practical rather than polished.

In public camping discussions, timing the approach around low tide is the most consistent practical advice. An independent K’gari campground comparison distinguishes Top's fenced amenities from the more exposed beachfront alternative. Conditions, shower operation and site quietness can change, so these remain traveller observations.

Booking Waddy Point Top#

Camping permits are required, and holiday periods require advance booking. Use the Queensland Parks booking service and select the correct tent, trailer or group inventory. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 11am, while actual travel timing should follow tides and daylight.
