Teewah Beach camping zone 4 occupies about 1.75km behind the foredunes near Red Canyon in Cooloola Recreation Area. It offers the same open-beach freedom as the other Teewah zones, but its interrupted layout makes a map check especially important: two broad no-camping areas south of Red Canyon separate the usable sections.
Understand zone 4 before arriving#
The booking covers the zone rather than an allocated campsite. Camp only in an existing clearing reached by a formed track and remain behind the vegetated foredune. The surface is sand and grass, with limited shade and wind protection. Bring sand pegs and avoid tying ropes to trees.
Study the official booking description and Teewah camping-zones map before choosing an entrance. The no-camping gaps mean the nearest visible camp may not be legally connected to your preferred section.
Beach driving and tide planning#
Zone 4 is accessible only by high-clearance 4WD, and every vehicle needs a Cooloola access permit. Beach access cuttings can be soft and rough. QPWS advises travelling around low tide; check the dated Cooloola conditions report because erosion, creek flows and sand cliffs change.
Carry recovery boards, a long-handled shovel, compressor, gauge and rated recovery equipment. Reduce tyre pressure appropriately before soft sand, reinflate afterward and keep speeds conservative around camps, people and wildlife.
No onsite toilets, water or bins#
Every camping party must bring and use an approved portable toilet with a sealed holding tank. The rule applies even for one night; bag and bucket systems are not accepted. Do not bury waste or empty it into ordinary park toilets. Authorised dump points include the Freshwater beach-camper service bay and facilities near the southern and northern approaches.
Bring all drinking water and carry rubbish out in sealed containers. Freshwater's service bay provides untreated tap water and cold outdoor showers, but untreated beach or creek water is not safe for drinking, cooking or washing.
Fire, power and communications#
Open fires and braziers are prohibited. A fully self-contained gas or manufactured-fuel appliance is the reliable cooking option when no broader fire ban applies. Generators are limited to 2.0kVA, 65dB and 7am–9pm; place them away from neighbours where the site layout allows.
There is no mobile reception. Download permits, tide information and emergency contacts before entering the recreation area. The nearest payphone is at Freshwater camping area.
What campers say#
Zone-specific reviews are limited, so the following patterns come from a Teewah review summary and a public discussion comparing zones:
- Campers commonly shortlist zone 4 for caravans and trailers, but the access-track angle and sand firmness still need an on-arrival assessment.
- Established clearings behind dunes can feel protected, while open sections remain exposed and have little natural shade.
- The beach scenery, fishing and sunrise are strong positives; vehicle traffic and noise are the corresponding trade-off.
- Holiday periods can be crowded and noisy, whereas off-peak stays are more likely to deliver the remote feel people expect.
- Portable-toilet and rubbish discipline materially affect the experience for the next camp.
Traveller reports do not override the permit, current conditions or no-camping boundaries.
Booking zone 4#
Reserve through Queensland Parks, obtain a vehicle permit and camp only in zone 4 for the dates shown. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is by 11am, but tide and safety conditions take priority over a rushed departure.
CampWatch can monitor supported dates if the zone is full. Keep another coastal or inland plan available when sand movement, fire, storms or unsafe tides affect the beach.
