Redbank Gorge (Ridgetop) Campground

Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park

Plan Redbank Gorge Ridgetop camping with high-clearance 4WD access, basic facilities, waterhole safety, booking advice and practical camper insights.

Redbank Gorge (Ridgetop) Campground is the elevated, view-focused option at the western end of Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park. It trades the Woodland campground's caravan access and more sheltered feel for a smaller-scale bush setting above the gorge country. Campers should arrive self-sufficient, with a suitable vehicle and enough daylight to assess the final approach.

Access and suitable setups#

The official Redbank Gorge page currently lists access as high-clearance 4WD only. Check the same page and the NT Road Report immediately before travel because rain and track damage can change conditions quickly.

Caravans are permitted only at Woodland Campground, not Ridgetop. Treat Ridgetop as a tent, swag or compact capable-vehicle camp and do not assume a trailer that fits elsewhere in Tjoritja will fit here. Secure loose gear and awnings: the elevated position that creates the outlook can also feel more exposed.

Facilities and water planning#

Redbank Gorge's two category B campgrounds share a basic level of infrastructure. NT Parks lists toilets, firepits and picnic tables. It also lists water as “boil before drinking”, but supply and quality should never be assumed in the Red Centre. Carry enough treated drinking and cooking water for the full stay, with a reserve for delays.

There are no powered sites or shower facilities listed. Bring a fuel stove even if you hope to use a firepit, and follow posted fire restrictions. Take rubbish out and keep food secured from wildlife.

The gorge and waterhole#

The gorge waterhole is about 1km from the car park. The route becomes rocky near the water, so sturdy shoes are more useful than sandals. NT Parks warns that the water is extremely cold year-round and prolonged immersion can cause hypothermia even in summer. A flotation device is recommended; never jump or dive because logs and rocks can be submerged.

Water level, clarity and wildlife conditions vary. Make the decision from current signs and ranger advice rather than a photo or old review.

Booking and park entry#

Book and pay through the NT Parks booking system before arrival—there is no on-site payment. A visitor pass is also required for applicable interstate and international visitors. Save the confirmation offline because reception is unreliable.

Ridgetop and Woodland are distinct products in the booking system. Double-check the campground name before paying, especially if your vehicle, trailer or preference for shelter makes Woodland the only practical choice.

What campers say#

Public feedback for the exact Ridgetop area is limited, but Tripadvisor reports about Redbank Gorge and the CamperMate listing provide useful context:

  • Campers repeatedly value the ridge views, especially near sunset, but describe the elevated sites as more exposed than Woodland.
  • Ridgetop can fill while Woodland still feels spacious, so the quieter camp and the best outlook are not always the same choice.
  • Cold nights surprise some visitors even after warm days; carry layers and a sleep system suited to desert temperature swings.
  • The rocky gorge approach is commonly described as slower and more physical than the short distance suggests.

These are traveller observations, not current access or safety advice.

If your dates are unavailable#

Compare the separate Woodland campground before abandoning Redbank Gorge: it accepts caravans and may suit travellers who prioritise shelter and space over elevation. CampWatch can monitor supported Ridgetop dates for cancellations, but keep a second Tjoritja campground in your plan in case track or fire conditions change.
