Butterfly Falls (Overflow) Campground is an additional bookable camping area at Butterfly Falls in remote Limmen National Park. It is useful when the main campground is busy, but “overflow” should not be read as an informal first-come-first-served field: select the named product online and use the area shown in your confirmation.

Remote access and trip range#

Limmen is reached via the Savannah Way from the Roper Highway or Carpentaria Highway. The official Limmen National Park page warns that services are very limited for 338km between Roper Bar and Cape Crawford and that supplies at Limmen Bight Fishing Camp are also limited.

Start with enough fuel, food, water, medication and recovery equipment to complete the drive without relying on an intermediate purchase. Download an offline map before leaving coverage, check the NT Road Report, and do not enter after heavy rain simply because a reservation remains active. Wet-season flooding can close the park.

What the overflow label means#

NT Parks' public park page confirms Butterfly Falls and its campground but does not publish a separate overflow site count, pad-size table or standalone amenity inventory. Use the live booking record for the exact allocation and avoid choosing a large rig based on assumptions about the main campground.

The setting remains a basic remote bush camp rather than a serviced holiday park. Bring your own drinking water, lighting and power plan, and be prepared to take rubbish out. Light fires only in provided fireplaces and obey any ban; a fuel stove is essential backup.

Seasonal falls and crocodile safety#

Butterfly Falls is seasonal. NT Parks says it can stop flowing in the dry season, so a booking does not guarantee a waterfall or swimming. It is the only place in Limmen where swimming is permitted; saltwater crocodiles inhabit the park's other waterways. Check current signs every time and never transfer a “safe to swim” assumption to a river, lagoon or crossing.

Do not use soaps or detergents near the water. Treat the pool and surrounding vegetation as the attraction, not as a washing facility.

Booking, pass and park rules#

Book and pay before arrival through the NT Parks booking system. You cannot pay on site. Visitors to the NT also need the applicable Parks Visitor Pass.

Pets are not allowed overnight. NT Parks permits pets only in the Butterfly Falls car park for a day visit, so the exception does not make either campground dog-friendly. Wildlife and cultural material are protected, and nets, traps and firearms are prohibited.

What campers say#

Campground-specific public opinion is sparse, especially for the overflow allocation. Broader reports on Tripadvisor's Limmen National Park page and the Anycamp Butterfly Falls listing suggest a few practical themes:

• Visitors value Butterfly Falls as a cooling, multi-night base in a very long remote drive.
• Campers describe the main area's toilets and allocated sites positively, but that does not prove identical overflow facilities.
• Wildlife sightings and the quiet setting are recurring positives; remoteness, dust and long supply runs are the trade-off.
• Water levels vary sharply through the dry season, so recent photos are more useful for atmosphere than prediction.

There is not enough independent evidence to claim a consensus on overflow shade, mobile reception or site spacing.

Other Limmen campgrounds can shorten or lengthen the next driving leg, but they do not substitute for Butterfly Falls if swimming is the priority.
