Beach camping zone 8 contains the Marloo, Ocean Lake and Duling camping areas between Waddy Point and Ngkala Rocks on K’gari's north-eastern beach. It offers a more remote beach base than the central zones, but that extra distance also raises the stakes for tide planning, fuel, vehicle preparation and recovery.
The permit covers a zone rather than a numbered site. Choose an established clearing behind the foredunes, keep off vegetation and expect conditions and occupancy to determine the best available position.
Marloo, Ocean Lake or Duling?#
All three sub-areas share the same core conditions: unfenced beach camping, no facilities and access by high-clearance 4WD. A named sub-area is useful for orientation, not a promise of shade, privacy or firm sand. Inspect the clearing itself for wind exposure, safe vehicle separation and room for the complete setup.
Camp only inside the mapped zone. The open beach is a traffic corridor and aircraft may use it, so tents and play areas belong behind the dunes. Refer to the official zone 8 booking page for current equipment and permit conditions.
The northern 4WD approach#
Reaching zone 8 means driving beyond Waddy Point toward Ngkala Rocks. Plan around safe tide windows and daylight, and allow substantially more time than a map distance suggests. Soft sand, washouts and the Ngkala Rocks bypass can slow or stop progress.
As checked on 14 September 2026, Queensland Parks had an active conditions alert for the Ngkala Rocks–Sandy Cape section. That alert may change, so open park alerts and the latest K’gari conditions report immediately before departure rather than relying on this guide.
Off-road camper trailers are permitted, but current sand, tides and driver experience still control whether the trip is sensible. Carry a tyre gauge, compressor, shovel, rated recovery equipment, adequate fuel and essential spares. Avoid seawater and never enter a difficult section without an exit plan.
Travelling with another capable vehicle can add useful recovery margin, but it does not replace conservative decisions, correct equipment or a realistic turnaround point.
Arrange a camping permit and a K’gari vehicle access permit before arrival. Save permits, maps and emergency information offline because reception is intermittent.
A self-sufficient, unfenced camp#
There are no toilets, water, showers, bins or picnic tables. Bring a portable toilet, all drinking water, sealed food storage, rubbish capacity and supplies for a delayed departure. Take waste to an authorised disposal point.
Campfires are prohibited. Generators up to 2kVA and below 65dB may operate from 9am to 9pm under Queensland Parks rules, although a quiet power setup is kinder to neighbouring camps.
Zone 8 is unfenced wongari (dingo) habitat. Queensland Parks recommends fenced campgrounds for families with young children. Keep children close, secure food and rubbish, never feed wongari and follow all current safety directions.
What campers say#
Public opinion about the individual Marloo, Ocean Lake and Duling clearings is sparse, so there is not enough evidence to rank one reliably above another. A K’gari camping guide from We Are Explorers highlights Ocean Lake and the eastern beach for sunrise, while also stressing the appeal of fenced sites for families. Treat the sunrise point as a broad east-coast observation, not a forecast for weather or shelter.
An independent K’gari camping overview characterises eastern beach zones as remote, no-facility camps exposed to traffic and weather. The practical lesson is to arrive with enough daylight to assess the actual clearing, rather than committing to a sub-area from online impressions.
Booking zone 8#
Book through the Queensland Parks service. Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 11am, but safe tides govern travel. If dates are unavailable, CampWatch can monitor supported cancellations while you keep checking the official calendar and alerts.
