Teewah Beach camping zone 2

Teewah Beach camping zone 2 is a 2.4km stretch of open camping behind the foredunes in Cooloola Recreation Area. It is one of the larger Teewah zones and lies toward the northern end of the 14km camping area, close enough to Freshwater for its service bay to be useful while still feeling like remote beach camping.

Zone 2 layout and camp choice#

There are no numbered or separately defined sites. Your permit reserves space in zone 2, not a particular clearing. Use an existing access track and established camp behind the vegetated foredune; vehicles, tents and equipment must stay off the dunes. Surfaces mix sand and grass, shade is limited and sand pegs are more useful than standard pegs.

The official zone 2 page places the zone 21km north of the third beach cutting on Noosa North Shore. From the Freshwater Road beach exit, its northern end is about 4.6km south. That makes the exact approach relevant when planning around tides.

4WD access, tides and permits#

A high-clearance 4WD and valid Cooloola vehicle access permit are required. The beach remains a road: normal Queensland road rules apply, and moving vehicles share the sand with children, walkers and anglers. QPWS says travel conditions improve near low tide; the Cooloola conditions report should decide the timing, not an old trip report.

Soft cuttings, erosion and high water can change the route. Carry rated recovery points, boards, a shovel, compressor and pressure gauge, and know how to use them before arriving.

Toilets, water and rubbish#

There are no toilets or bins in zone 2. Every group must bring and use a proper portable toilet with a sealed holding tank, including for a one-night stay. Bag, bucket and disposable toilets do not comply. Empty waste only at an authorised facility; the beach camper service bay opposite Freshwater day-use area has dump points, untreated tap water and cold outdoor showers.

Bring drinking water. QPWS warns against using beach pools, creeks or subsurface water for drinking, cooking, bathing or swimming. Pack all rubbish out in sealed containers.

Fires, generators and reception#

Open fires are prohibited throughout Teewah Beach. Braziers are also banned. A compliant self-contained gas or manufactured-fuel appliance may be used when current fire conditions allow. Generators up to 2.0kVA and 65dB may run only from 7am to 9pm.

Mobile reception is not available. A payphone is located at Freshwater camping area, but offline permits, maps and emergency plans are essential.

What campers say#

Public feedback usually discusses Teewah as a whole rather than separating zone 2. A recent review summary and a public Sunshine Coast discussion suggest a balanced pattern:

• Travellers often rate zones 1, 2 and 4 as practical choices for larger setups, but entrance angles and sand change after weather events.
• Dune-backed camps can reduce some wind, yet shade remains scarce and exposed camps need secure awnings.
• Low-tide travel is repeatedly recommended; peak periods can feel more like a busy beach road than a quiet retreat.
• Fishing, sunrise views and winter whale sightings are recurring highlights.
• Noise and poor waste behaviour are reported more often in busy holiday periods, making site choice and timing important.

These are traveller observations, not guarantees about access, safety or current crowding.

Booking and arrival plan#

Book zone 2 through the Queensland Parks booking service and purchase the vehicle permit separately. Your booking applies only to the named zone and dates. Save both permits offline, check park alerts and weather, then plan to arrive after 2pm within the safest tide window. Check-out is by 11am.
