Miners Campground

Miners is the practical choice if you want to sleep inside Coalseam Conservation Park and start its short geology and wildflower walks from camp. It is a poor match if you need power, showers, soft tent ground, drinking water or a private campfire.

Choose Miners for the trip you want#

Which site should you choose?#

DBCA tells campers to compare the live site details and campground map when booking, but it does not publish a dependable “best site” for shade or privacy. Choose by fit, not an old review:

• Caravan or long setup: check the current listed site dimensions and turning room before paying.
• Tent: every surface is compacted gravel. Bring heavy-duty pegs and a mallet; do not assume any numbered pitch has softer ground.
• Shortest amenities trip: ask Park Stay which available site has the easiest route to the accessible toilets. DBCA places the toilets in the adjacent picnic area, about 75m from the camping area, but that is not a pitch-by-pitch distance.
• Quietest possible stay: avoid treating an unverified site number as a promise. Ask the booking contact about distance from the picnic area, host position and generator exposure.

A single 2023 Tripadvisor report favoured site 19 for its outlook, but it described an older 22-site layout. The current official inventory is 25 sites, so that anecdote is not a sound present-day recommendation.

Booking and cost#

Bookings are essential through WA Park Stay. As checked on 1 October 2026, the fixed nightly camping fees are $15 per adult, $10 per concession adult and $5 per child; there is no booking fee or Coalseam vehicle-entry fee. Cancellation charges can apply. Availability and the final total are live-quote information, so confirm them in the checkout rather than relying on a cached price.

What arrival is actually like#

Coalseam is about 30km north-east of Mingenew. The current park visitor guide describes the approach as well-formed gravel suitable for all vehicles year-round, but the Irwin River crossing can flood after heavy rain.

Before leaving sealed-road services, check the Shire of Mingenew road conditions after significant rain and DBCA alerts. Do not enter water solely because another vehicle has crossed. On arrival, locate your booked site, check the hard surface before unhitching, then identify the picnic-area toilets and walking-trail starts. Check-in is 11am and check-out is 10am.

Pack for the actual facilities and rules#

• Bring all drinking and cooking water, food, fuel, medication, first aid, rubbish bags and a gas stove.
• There are no showers. Two unisex accessible no-flush toilets serve the picnic area; DBCA does not claim that the whole campground is wheelchair accessible.
• Carry portable-toilet waste to an authorised dump point; do not empty it into campground toilets.
• Generators may run only 9–11am and 4–6pm.
• Private fires are prohibited. A host may light the communal pit from July to October only when conditions permit.
• Dogs are not permitted.

A worthwhile day without moving camp#

Start with the 700m-return Miners Walk to the Johnson coal-shaft viewing platform, then take the 3.2km Plateau Loop for the valley and seasonal wildflowers. Both are Class 3; allow your own margin for heat, photo stops and uneven ground. Carry water—the park guide advises one litre per person per hour when walking—and turn back if heat, storms or a flooded crossing make the route unsafe.

What campers say#

Public first-hand evidence is thin. Tripadvisor and an independent 2021 trip report were checked, along with Anycamp and Reddit searches. One detailed 2023 stay described a pleasant creek outlook and pressure on the single toilet block, but no second independent current report established either as a recurring condition. Treat toilet demand, reception and a particular pitch outlook as things to verify, not promises.

Alternatives#

• Breakaway Campground: use the park's overflow option when Miners is full. It has no toilets, so campers need a chemical cassette toilet; Miners remains the better choice for basic amenities.
• Mingenew accommodation: choose town facilities if water, showers or easier resupply matter more than waking inside Coalseam. You will need to drive back for the park walks.

Recheck before leaving#

On your travel day, recheck DBCA alerts, Emergency WA and local road conditions. Use Park Stay's contact link if your rig dimensions, toilet access or site allocation remain unclear. Conditions at the river crossing and whether the communal firepit can operate are volatile and cannot be settled by an article.
