Ippinitchie Campground

Ippinitchie suits campers who want a small, book-ahead woodland camp beside a seasonal creek and can live with a drop toilet, no shower and no bins. It is especially useful because the ten official site listings let you choose by rig, group size and toilet distance instead of guessing.

Choose the experience—and the site#

All sites are unpowered, flat and partly shaded, with their own firepit. The live NPWS SA booking page, checked 1 October 2026, distinguishes them:

Measure the complete opened setup, not only the vehicle. “Part shade” is the operator's category, not a guarantee of all-day shade.

Booking and cost#

This is a book-before-you-go campground. The live page prices by site capacity: on the 1 October 2026 surface, five-person/one-vehicle sites displayed $15.40 and ten-person/two-vehicle sites $24.20 for one night. Those are dated examples, not fixed promises. Confirm dates, party, vehicles, cancellation terms and total in checkout.

The old page's claim that booking a few days ahead is usually enough had no evidence and has been removed.

What arrival is actually like#

Ippinitchie is off Forest Road about 6km west of Wirrabara. NPWS lists 2WD and 4WD access, but site 10 specifically requires high clearance. The campground is dispersed along Ippinitchie Creek, which runs only seasonally.

Download the booking and route information before leaving coverage. On arrival, match the site number to the confirmation, check the footprint and creek/causeway condition, then locate the drop toilet before unhitching. If bringing a caravan, do not proceed to sites 8–10: the current inventory does not list caravans there.

Facilities, comfort and rules#

• A drop toilet and water tank are listed. NPWS does not state that tank water is treated or guaranteed, so bring all drinking and cooking water.
• There are no bins; take all rubbish out.
• Every pitch has a firepit. Keep fire inside it, bring your own firewood and obey seasonal restrictions—collecting wood is prohibited.
• Dogs are not allowed. This corrects stale third-party and previous CampWatch dog-friendly information.
• No shower, power or stated dump point is provided.
• The site pages do not claim wheelchair access; ask NPWS SA about the current surface and toilet before booking for mobility needs.

A worthwhile day#

Ride or walk the 7.2km Wirrabara Forest shared-use trail, which NPWS describes as a gentle, smooth beginner mountain-bike route but still warns of roots, logs and rocks. Start from the picnic-area trail network, give way on the shared path and carry enough water. For Bluff Lookout, leave caravans and other large/towed vehicles at camp: the lookout road is narrow, sealed and officially unsuitable for them.

What campers say#

CamperMate, Anycamp, Reddit and independent trip reports were checked. Several independent reports describe the woodland setting as quiet and shaded, but older reports conflict with current rules on price, booking and dogs. A 2025 return report supports the current ten-site, book-ahead arrangement. Use recent official listings for rules and treat creek flow, toilet condition and solitude as variable observations.

Alternatives#

• Wirrabara Caravan Park: choose the town option when serviced convenience matters more than the forest setting. Confirm current facilities and availability directly.
• Mambray Creek Campground: choose this larger national-park campground for hot showers and a broader trail network. It is a different destination and a longer detour, not an overflow site for Ippinitchie.

Recheck before leaving#

Check SA park alerts and fire restrictions on the travel day. Confirm the site's live price, vehicle limit and suitability in the booking record. Ask NPWS SA whether the tank is usable, whether firepits may operate and whether recent rain affects Forest Road or the creek crossing; these are material conditions the static page cannot settle.
