About the fuel data

The live station prices, outage alerts and price-by-fuel-type data in this planner come from PetrolPulse, an Australian fuel-price aggregator. PetrolPulse stitches together all of the state government price-disclosure feeds so you can compare stations on one map instead of juggling FuelCheck, FuelPriceQLD, FuelWatch and the rest.

If you road-trip often, it’s worth bookmarking PetrolPulse directly — the site lets you check prices by suburb, filter by fuel type, and see which stations are currently out of stock across the country.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the live fuel prices come from?

Fuel prices in the planner are sourced from PetrolPulse (petrolpulse.com.au), an Australian fuel-price aggregator. PetrolPulse pulls from the official state government feeds (NSW FuelCheck, QLD FuelPriceQLD, WA FuelWatch, SA FuelPricing, and equivalents) and normalises them into a single API.

How often are prices updated?

NSW, ACT, QLD and SA refresh every 30 minutes. WA refreshes every 6 hours (FuelWatch publishes once a day for next-day prices). VIC updates twice daily with about a 24-hour lag. NT and TAS update once a day. We show an 'Updated X ago' timestamp next to each station so you know how fresh a price is.

Why might the price at the pump differ from what's shown here?

A few reasons: state feeds can lag the pump by 30 minutes to several hours depending on the state; stations sometimes run unannounced promotional prices; and the daily price cycle in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne can swing prices by 40–50 cents a litre in a single afternoon. Use PetrolPulse prices as a strong guide, but always cross-check the board on arrival.

Does PetrolPulse cover every fuel station in Australia?

It covers all stations that report into the state government price-disclosure schemes, which is the vast majority of urban and highway stations. Very remote roadhouses (Gibb River Road, Tanami, parts of the Nullarbor and outback QLD) sometimes aren't in the feeds — for those, call ahead or budget generously.

What about fuel shortages or out-of-stock stations?

PetrolPulse publishes a live fuel-shortage map at petrolpulse.com.au/fuel-shortage that tracks stations currently out of a particular fuel type. The trip planner pulls from the same feed and filters it down to stations within 5 km of your driving route, shown as red pins. If there are more outages elsewhere in the state we note that too.

Can I use PetrolPulse directly, outside of this trip planner?

Yes — petrolpulse.com.au/find lets you look up live prices by suburb or along a route, and petrolpulse.com.au/fuel-shortage shows the national outage map. Both are free to use.

I think a price here is wrong. What do I do?

Most incorrect prices are actually already fixed on the source state feed within a couple of hours — our cache refreshes every 5 minutes so the planner will pick it up shortly. For persistent issues, you can email PetrolPulse at mark@petrolpulse.com.au.
