Honeysuckle Campground

Honeysuckle Campground is an unpowered bush camp in Namadgi National Park, south of Canberra. It occupies the former Honeysuckle Creek space-tracking area and works well as a base for nearby walks, including routes towards Booroomba Rocks and sections of the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Sealed-road access makes it more approachable than many remote camps, but it is still a national-park stay. Tank water is untreated, phone service should not be assumed, fires depend on current conditions and supplies need to come with you.

Sites, groups and stay limits#

The official ACT Parks booking page describes unallocated, unpowered sites. Each site has a maximum of six people, and the booking quantity must match the number of sites required. The page does not publish a reliable total site count, so this guide does not invent one.

The maximum stay is seven consecutive days. Larger or organised groups may need an ACT Parks permit, and the booking page advises allowing at least 28 days for a permit application. Confirm the requirements before organising an event or group walk.

Check-in is after 2pm and check-out is before 10am. Arriving in daylight makes it easier to understand an unallocated layout without disturbing campers who are already settled.

Facilities and what to bring#

ACT Parks lists an outdoor drop toilet, covered picnic tables, shelter, a gas barbecue, wood fireplaces, wheelchair access and an untreated rainwater tank. Bring drinking water rather than assuming tank volume or quality, along with rubbish bags, lighting, warm layers and a fuel stove.

Bring your own firewood if you intend to use a fireplace. Fire bans or park closures override normal fireplace availability. Pets are prohibited. The campground is reached on a sealed road, but that does not remove the need to check conditions before leaving Canberra or Tharwa.

Access and nearby walks#

The campground is on Apollo Road in Tennent, around 17km south of Tharwa. Its location near the former tracking station gives access to a significant part of Namadgi's walking network. The Australian Alps Walking Track runs north towards Mount Tennent and south towards Orroral Valley, while Booroomba Rocks is another prominent nearby objective.

Choose a walk for your party's fitness, weather and remaining daylight. Namadgi covers a large alpine and subalpine landscape, and marked routes do not guarantee phone reception or fast assistance. Download maps and tell someone your plan.

What campers say#

Public, campground-specific opinion is sparse. A public walk video from Honeysuckle illustrates the value of using the campground as a hiking base, while another public trip video shows why travellers should check access alerts rather than assume an earlier plan remains possible. The limited, qualified takeaways are:

• proximity to substantial Namadgi walks is the strongest practical reason to stay
• sealed-road access lowers the driving barrier, but the setting still feels removed from city services
• a daylight arrival helps with an unallocated site layout
• current alerts and weather deserve a final check because access changes can overturn a planned visit

There is not enough independent review evidence to claim a consensus about the quietest area, toilet cleanliness, shade, insects or mobile reception.

Booking and cancellation terms#

Full payment is required through ACT Parks. The booking page says fees are reviewed annually, so use the live total rather than an old quoted price. It currently publishes a 90% refund for cancellations made at least eight days before arrival and no refund within seven days. One transfer may be available with at least 48 hours' notice, subject to the stated conditions; confirm these terms when booking.
